Preparing the soil – Day 7
Thorns
“Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.” Luke 8:7
“The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity.” Luke 8:14
The location of one garden bed we planned was against the wall of the house. Only when we started working on this little patch of earth we noticed it was not grass we were removing but thorn producing weeds. (Those little paper thorns leaving a simultaneous itching and burning feeling when piercing your skin) I was surprised upon closer inspection, that the thorny weeds killed all the grass and was systematically taking over that part of the garden. As you glance your eye over the area, you see green – so all seems in place – until you bend your knees and take a closer look.
This is the same with the soil of our hearts. The seed takes root, but slowly, all the thorny things we start accepting about the world (idolatry, immorality etc) start to choke out the true Word of God. Glancing over your heart may seem all is in order (something green is growing), but it’s only when you are on your knees that you notice the thorns taking over.
Prayer: Father, please show me the patches in my heart being covered with weeds. Bring me to my knees, Lord so I can start removing them and making the soil of my heart fertile again for Your seed. Amen.
