Day 8 – Generosity
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” Malachi 3:10
Just like my mother did with me, I placed a few coins in my children’s hands when it was collection time in church. This was the first time I did this with my youngest as she just refused to go to the kids’ church.
She looked at the coins in her hand and to the basket making its way towards us. As she dropped the coins, her other hand followed and took some out again. With shock, the deacon took turns to look at me and her, shook his head, and moved on. “What did you do?” I whispered in my best “you’re in trouble” mommy voice, to which she nonchalantly replied, “I took chance.”
Teaching our children about generosity in this self-centered, selfish inspired world, can prove to be challenging. Tithing is a great principle to teach children about their own generosity towards the church, and importantly, God’s generosity. You can never out-give God. My prayer is that a heart of generosity is cultivated in our children and that God’s blessings will pour over them from the windows of heaven.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of generosity. Help us to teach our children the concept of giving and the principle of tithing. I pray that generosity will be at the forefront of their Christian walk and I ask that You, o Lord, will bless them for it. Thank You for Your generosity towards us daily. Amen.
