Rebekah

Today we meet kind Rebekah. A woman willing to draw water for a stranger and invite him to her family home. True to the meaning of her name, “captivating beauty”, Abraham’s servant was taken by her beauty as well as her kindness and requested her as a bride for Isaac. She recognizes this invitation is from the Lord and in obedience accepts.

Even though she is depicted as impatient and showing favoritism amongst her children, she was part of the story of Israel. God chose Rebekkah because of her readiness and preparedness. She was a quick decision-maker, which at the end of her story turned into her greatest weakness. Today we can learn from  Rebekah that a strength God has given us, can easily become a weakness if we don’t keep our eye on Jesus. Rebekah’s willingness to help eventually caused her to lie and steal her older son’s blessing from her husband.

Yes, she made mistakes and tried to do things her own way, struggling to trust God’s ultimate plan for her, her family, and the nation. Yet, God was rich in his love and mercy towards her and He is towards me and you too. Each one of us has our own list of flaws but God does not disqualify us – He created us and showers us with undeserved mercy and Grace.
