Dues ex Machina

Ruth 2:1 “Now there was a wealthy and influential man in Bethlehem named Boaz, who was a relative of Naomi’s husband, Elimelech.” NLT

There is a literary device writers use when telling stories called “dues ex Machina”. It’s a technique where the author of the story inserts something unlikely or even impossible to save the day. Chapter 1 of Ruth paints a dreary picture of what happened to Naomi and Ruth, but between the unwritten lines, we know that their future looks bleak too. And then the unlikely: the mention of Boaz – immediately lifting the hope of the reader, because we know that he can be their saviour. Their redeemer. Their hope.

In our relationship with God, our Father, He is our dues ex Machina. When it feels like your story is following the same hopeless trail than that of Ruth, in steps God – directing our focus to Him, our Saviour. Our Redeemer. Our Hope.

I love testimonies! There is always a “But God”. The moment our story Creator becomes the dues ex Machina in lives and turns a seemingly impossible situation into a miracle! How hopeless is your situation really? But God…

Ruth Relationship Advice: Nothing in our lives is wasted. In God’s story for us, every detail has value and purpose.

Prayer: Father, thank You, my Creator, my story Writer, for being the dues ex Machina more than once in my life. I pray and ask that when I feel hopeless, to turn my focus and attention back to You. Thank You for loving me so much that every detail of my life has value and purpose – even the sombre chapters. Amen.
