Day 11 – Hivites

“These are the nations: the Philistines (those living under the five Philistine rulers), all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.” Judges 3:3 NLT
Joshua warned Israel that when they came to Canaan, they would see lifestyles contradictory to the Word of God, and though it might look glamorous from the outside, the truth was it will bring them death. Basically, he warned them that the grass is not greener on the other side. Hivite means tent-dweller; living a lifestyle in the confines of the system of the world. This strategy lures you with what the world offers you: glamour, fun, and self-centeredness. The Prodigal son left his father’s house in search of greener pastures. Soon he realised the lifestyle he thought he was entering into was not what he thought and left him eating pods with the swine.
“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.” and “And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” John 2:15, 17 (NLT) God’s strategy entails that we do what pleases Him, meaning when we forgo our love of the world and the things thereof. When we do this, the enemy cannot lure us onto greener grass and we walk freely on the righteous path God gives us to follow.
Prayer: Father, thank You for showing us through the story of the Prodigal son that the grass is not greener on the other side, and when we choose to love the things of the world, we cannot love You. Father, please show me the things I love more than You and help me to let them go. Your love is gracious and eternal and I choose to love You. Amen.
