Day 16 – Exodus: Theme

“In time, Joseph and all of his brothers died, ending that entire generation. But their descendants, the Israelites, had many children and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied so greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled the land.” Exodus 1:6-7 NLT

From the first Exodus chapter, we already see the first fruits of God’s promise to Abraham as the Israelites grew into a nation big enough to be a threat to the Egyptians. In those days, big nations equalled superiority, strength, and dominion. Pharoah enslaved this mighty nation to keep them under the rule of Egypt. Through this act, God’s people cried out to Him and He answered mightily with miracles, strange events, and a chosen servant.

From Egyptian prince to outcast, Moses mobilised the Israelites to answer in obedience to God’s call to freedom. Their steps into the wilderness were uncertain but faith-filled. Through guidance, protection, and provision the nation of Israel was forged while following the pillars of cloud and fire and receiving God’s instructions for righteous living. Through His relationship with His chosen nation, we see a loving – yet firm – hand throughout their wilderness wanderings.

I know sometimes it feels like we are lost wanderers in the wilderness and our spiritual growth looks sparse and dry, but lovely one, throughout this time the Israelites were provided for, cared for, instructed, guided, guarded and finally rewarded with God’s promise fulfilment. And it is no different for you. Get up, obey, and follow God’s instructions.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the history of Israel and how You looked after Your nation so we can learn today that no matter where we find ourselves, You will take care of us too. May we learn from their murmurings and hard-headedness to be more obedient to Your word and live in peace with those around us. Amen.
