Day 268 – 2 Corinthians: Paul explains and defends his ministry

“We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.” 2 Corinthians 1:12 NLT

Read 2 Corinthians 1:1 to 2 Corinthians 7:16

In this letter, Paul defends his role in church discipline. Neither immorality nor false teachings could be ignored. The church was to be neither too lax nor too severe in administering discipline. He responds to the attacks on his character and authority without lording it over the church. Paul explains the nature of Christian ministry and, as an example, openly shares about his ministry.

Paul experienced great suffering, persecution, and opposition in his ministry and had to struggle with his own weakness – a “thorn” in the flesh. But through it all, he affirmed God’s faithfulness. God is still faithful. His strength is sufficient for any trail. And when they come, they keep us from pride and teach us dependence on God. Be assured and encouraged that he comforts us so we can comfort others.

This letter resonates true for churches today. The goal of discipline in the church should be correction, not vengeance. For churches to be effective and healthy members of the Body of Christ, they must confront and solve problems, not ignore them. But in everything, we must always act in love.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the authority You gave Paul to write these strict, love-filled letters to the church of Corinth and to us. May we understand to use our authority wisely and not shy away from maintaining the discipline You put in place. Amen.
