Day 4 – Terminology: Mentor and mentee

“Two are better than one because they have a more satisfying return for their labor; for if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 AMP
We were never meant to be alone. We might not think so, but we all need someone to depend on. In Genesis, God gave Adam a helper. In Luke, Jesus sent His disciples out in pairs. At any given time in your life, you will be a mentor to someone, or you will be a mentee. Whichever situation you are in, you will learn something – or teach it.
Being a mentor means you have the skills, knowledge, insight, experience, or wisdom that someone else does not have, but needs. Biblical mentoring entails more than merely passing on knowledge. It involves showing people how to love and serve God. Mentors have different responsibilities and objectives, and a mentee needs to find a mentor with a common goal. The mentor’s responsibility is to develop a mentee, not to conform their thinking to how they see fit.
A mentee has the advantage of having someone who makes their personal and professional growth a priority. Mentees will mimic a mentor’s behavioural traits and copy the important facets. Throughout the Bible, we see Mentor-Mentee relationships.
Titus 2:3 (ESV) says, “Older women likewise are to be reverent in behaviour, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women.” God requires from us to mentor to younger women, to our daughters and to our peers so they will show Christian characteristics and values.
Prayer: God, thank You for giving us mentors to help us grow in our faith. Let us strive to become a mentor to others, to uplift them and strengthen their faith with Your guidance. Give us the knowledge, patience, and wisdom to be good mentors. Give us a burning desire to learn, and to be humble mentees eager to learn. Amen.
