Day 46 – More than a healing
Study Luke 5:17-26
“But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’?” Luke 5:22-23
Many Jewish teachers felt that behind every serious sickness lay a specific sin. We know that sickness and death came into the world by way of sin, and if the cleansing of the leper demonstrated what Jesus Christ can do with the pollution of sin, the healing of the paralytic friend shows what God can do with the inability caused by sin. Amongst the host of problems sin brings with it is this: sin disables sinners so they cannot come to Jesus. This miracle before us proves that even when sinners have no power, Jesus has authority over everything. We were born into sin; He was not.
The presence of so much sickness, disease, and demonic possessions among Israel is evidence of their lack of obedience to the Sinai Covenant and of their current low spiritual state. God did promise that these curses would come upon them if they disobeyed in Deuteronomy 28. Jesus, however, overcomes sickness and its cause, which is sin.
Pray with me: Father, thank You that we know our sins are forgiven through Jesus Christ, Your Son. Please point out the sins in my life – those known and unknown to me – so I can repent of them. Thank You, Jesus, that You came for the root and not the symptoms of sin and that when You heal and forgive, it is completely. Amen. ©
