Day 5 – Sin does not get blessed

“We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.” John 9:31 NLT

Unfortunately, I need to say this, under NO circumstances does God bless sin. Any sin, just to make the statement clear. With love and mercy, God created us with free will to make choices and act. But, with this free will comes the responsibility of understanding and facing the consequences – negative and positive – of our chosen actions. Almost 100% of what happens is due to the choices we’ve made, and the choices others make influencing our lives. Certainly, we would err when giving God credit for what we think are blessings in sinful situations and under no circumstances should we ever blame our actions and those of others on God. Also, we can never claim that God has blessed sinful people in response to their sins. Sin is not His fault. If the thought crossed your mind that God would do this, you are not walking in a blessed relationship with the Creator of all.

To use this example, I’ve come across a few times as a pastor: if your spouse cheats on you, with or without leaving you, and chooses to have a happy life with the adultery party, has God blessed them with that happiness? No! When they chose to be together, happiness is the natural result (at first). God would never bless the sin of adultery, even though you are unhappy in your marriage. Whilst you are in a covenant of marriage (and I would like to go as far as to include developing relationships) you are in union with God. Isn’t one of the commandments “do not commit adultery”? So why would God bless this?

When looking at blessings, we should be very careful to identify the blessings straight from God’s hand and Word instead of the idea of blessing the world gives us. Using your free will to choose the righteous action (even if it is difficult) is already a result of the blessings of God’s Word.

Prayer: Father, often we justify our sins and when a choice and action is favorable, we think it is Your hand of blessing upon it. I ask Father, to please open our eyes and hearts, Lord, to see our sins for what it is and to bring them to repentance at the feet of Jesus. Guide us to understand our free will and to take our decisions and actions seriously. Thank You for forgiveness Jesus and guide us to walk in righteousness with you. In Jesus’s Name, amen.
