Day 8 – Paths of righteousness

“He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Psalm 23:3

Not all paths are as straight as we would like them to be. I had the privilege to witness a sermon where a North-African Pastor explained Psalm 23 from a shepherd’s point of view. I cannot remember his name, unfortunately, but I have not forgotten his words. He explained that the shepherds did not lead the sheep along the steep paths heading straight up the mountain, but the “right” paths which are winding – sort of snaking up the mountain. It is longer in the measured distance, but easier and safer for the sheep to walk up steep slopes.

I know that in our humanity (our own stubborn will) we try to find the shortest possible way – even a shortcut if we can. The easy way out. But luckily our ways are not His. At times God may lead you along winding paths: left, then right, and back with a gradual elevation to the summit instead of straight to the top like an arrow loosed from a bow. How beautiful to know that paths of righteousness are winding and picked out by the Shepherd for our safety for His name’s sake.

You know the voice of the Shepherd. It’s time to follow him along the path of righteousness.

Prayer: Father, I humbly ask forgiveness for the times I stubbornly try to march on my own paths instead of following Yours. Though they are winding, they are righteous for Your Name’s sake. You have paved them out for my safety and I thank You for that. Open our eyes to see the winding paths toward the top and enjoy the journey with You. Amen.
