Day 85 – Fear and faith cannot coexist
Study Luke 8:49-50
“…someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, ‘Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.’” Luke 8:49
While Jesus was pausing to lavish tender grace upon the healing woman, a messenger arrived from Jairus’s house with devastating news: “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”
We can imagine how Jairus’s heart completely shattered at those words. He must have thought, “I knew this took too long. I knew Jesus shouldn’t have wasted time on that woman. Now it is too late.” Every fear he had harbored rushed in to drown his hope.
But Jesus intercepted his panic before despair could take root. Turning immediately to the grieving father, Jesus gave him two life-changing commands: “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.”
It sounds almost impossible for Jesus to tell a grieving father not to be afraid, but He knew that fear and faith cannot coexist. Jairus had to make a conscious choice to put away his terror and rest entirely on the spoken word of Christ. When every circumstance around us screams that a situation is beyond repair, Jesus asks us to drop our fears and anchor our trust solely in Him.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, when discouraging news arrives and my heart sinks into panic, help me to obey Your gentle command. Silence my fears, strengthen my spirit, and teach me to choose faith when all hope seems lost. Amen. ©
