Day 8 – Fearing God

There is more to say about thinking on all that is admirable, right and just. (Philippians 4:8)

The Greek suggests “pious” or “fearing God”, which makes me realize that this instruction is again about ‘thought-captivity’ to God and His qualities. “Fear of God” means to reverence and to stand in awe of God.

If there is one thing we should all cultivate more of, it is the fear of God! Fearing God brings wisdom, keeps us from sin, motivates us to share the gospel and is sure to result in beautiful fruit! “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to love Him, to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul…” Deuteronomy 10:12

To think on justice also means that we should not keep our minds focused on that which is unjust.

Injustices will always be around, but we should not be thinking on them since they bring about anger and hopelessness. Instead, let us focus on acting fairly and justly in all we do.

Justice is not only the wicked getting what they deserve, but God giving mercy to us who don’t deserve it, going above and beyond what justice requires. Jesus Christ didn’t just take away our sin and the punishment of hell, He also then graciously added a home in Heaven and a personal relationship with the Father!

Focusing on justice enables us to direct our thoughts to the one who alone is fully just and righteous.

Prayer: Abba, thank You for Your unfathomable mercy! Help me to focus on justice; to act and speak justly; and not to dwell on injustice. More than anything Father, teach me how to love You with all my heart and soul. Amen
