Day 3 – House of servants

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” John 13:34 (NLT)

For a very long time, I chose to believe this verse only applies to strangers (and maybe acquaintances). Because I do love my family – what more is needed, right? The realisation of this verse hit hard when the Holy Spirit taught me this verse applies first and foremost to those in my direct circle – my family. Jesus did not say this to the multitudes, but His disciples – those closest to Him. Ever heard of the saying, “Charity starts at home”? I would like to change it today to: “Love starts at home”

Daily we work, clean, support, listen to, teach, and endlessly give of ourselves to our family. Often we can feel overwhelmed with all that we must do. But for your house to serve the Lord, we need to learn to serve our family first.

Jesus added: “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (verse 35). As we lovingly give of ourselves to our family and serve them with hearts full of the love Jesus refers to, our acts also serve God. We teach our children to serve in a house that serves the Lord, which they in turn will one day teach their children too. May me and my house be a house of servants who will serve the Lord and each other with divine love from the heart of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Father, thank You for teaching me that this commandment Jesus affirmed in John does not just apply to people I do not know, but to my direct family. Show me ways to serve my family out of this love and teach them to become servants towards each other too and in turn show the world that we are Your disciples. Teach my house to serve You by serving each other. Amen.
